Why do we give dogs names?

... Because our dogs don't actually know that their owner (or mistress) is calling their name across the field to stop them from digging the hole even deeper. Behavioral researchers now assume that dogs only react to their name because they have heard it so often that the sound and melody of the word seem familiar to them.

So names benefit us more than our dogs, because giving your furry friend a name inevitably deepens the bond with your paw a little more. Still somehow sweet, isn't it?

How to Choose the Ideal Dog Name

The agony of choice. Once you've found the right paw, the next challenge arises: What do I call my furry friend? After all, your paw will bear that name for a lifetime and respond to it. So, how do I choose the right name for my four-legged friend?

Of course, your furry friend is unique, and their name should reflect that. But be careful of names that are too long or complicated, because if the name is too long or has very soothing sounds, your four-legged friend's attention will quickly wane – no matter how melodious the name sounds. So, Radegund von Fichtenstein and Raimunda vom Grötelswald are already out.

Short, concise and especially two-syllable names like Bobby or Rex are perfect for catching and holding a dog's attention. In any case, names that sound like a command should be avoided (e.g., Fritz, because it sounds like "Sit!", Julius and Thaddäus sound like "Heel!", and Klaus like "Out!").
