The long summer nights are over, the hours of sunshine replaced by the fog spreading across the fields. Autumn and winter invite dog and owner (or
mistress) to stay indoors and take things down a notch. Of course, on particularly cold days, it's hard to go out for another walk.

Just like their owners, furry friends should also have the right autumn and winter combo hanging in their dog wardrobe at home. However, with the overwhelming selection on the dog accessory market, it can sometimes quickly become confusing, because: What accessories does my four-legged friend need and how do I combine them correctly?

Rain

Snow

Winter coats are often not necessary for healthy dogs with an undercoat, but old, sick, or thin-skinned dogs with short fur and/or no undercoat will appreciate the extra layers to ensure their body temperature doesn't drop during the cold season.

Cold

By the way!

How do I know if my dog has an undercoat?

Dog breeds such as poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs, Maltese, Havanese, and Malinois do not have an undercoat. This is evident because they shed little to no hair during shedding season. By examining your four-legged friend's coat and looking for fluff under the topcoat, you can determine if your paw has an undercoat.

How do I know if my dog is cold?

The most obvious sign that your dog is cold is shivering. However, to prevent your four-legged friend from shivering in the first place, it's worth briefly touching their paw if you suspect a low body temperature. If your dog snuggles closer to you or a heat source, or adopts a cramped posture, you can assume that your furry friend is too cold and that you should perhaps seek shelter in the nearest café instead.
